I have brought warmth and life to my own garden, combining a colourful pergola, fragrant planting, seasonal interest from plants in a group of terracotta containers, wildlife friendly due to a range of flowers and winter berries.
The wish list
A long narrow garden behind a Victorian house, this space was on four levels with a lot of hard grey landscaping. The garden needed softening with more colourful plants, safe play areas for children to play and generous spaces for entertaining.
The magic wand
I used the existing levels to create play areas for children, connected by the lawn. I added containers to form a colourful and changing focal point in the centre. Next to the house, there was sufficient room to have a generous pergola, with shade gradually forming as the vine grew well in the sheltered south facing position, creating a relaxing place beneath to dine on summer evenings below.
“I learned a lot from working on my own garden and the results are perfect for the varied ways we use the garden.”
